Do not forget
What else you need besides panels
A roof is a kit: panels, trim, fasteners or clips, closures, sealant and butyl, and underlayment. Here is the checklist for each system.
PBR, R Panel, Tuff Rib, corrugated (exposed fastener)
- Panels: Cut to length, billed per linear foot (LF)
- Trim: Ridge, eave, rake, valley, wall flashing. R Panel, PBR and corrugated: custom bent, $63.00 per 10-ft piece. Tuff Rib: stocked profiles, $5.84–$113.39 per piece by profile (see table below)
- Fasteners: Hex screws with rubber washers, $60.00–$80.00 per bag of 250. Plan on about 80 per square plus side-lap stitch screws; the exact pattern comes from the panel's Florida Product Approval
- Closures: Foam closure strips for PBR / Tuff Rib, $10.00 per pack of 4. Corrugated and R Panel closures: call to confirm
- Sealant / butyl: Butyl tape, 1/8 in x 1 in x 40 ft, $20.00 per roll (panel side laps, closures, under ridge cap), APS 500 sealant $20.00 per tube (trim laps and boot edges)
- Underlayment: Synthetic roll, $129.50 per roll (about 195 sq ft before laps, so plan on about 175 sq ft of roof per roll). Needed over a solid deck (on a new roof or tear-off, Florida code also requires peel-and-stick over the whole deck, self-adhered tape over every deck joint plus underlayment, or two layers); open purlin installs usually have none
5V Crimp (exposed fastener)
- Panels: Cut to length, billed per linear foot (LF)
- Trim: Ridge, eave, rake, valley and wall flashings made for 5V (see table below)
- Fasteners: Hex screws, same bags as above
- Closures: 5V inside / outside closures, $1.88 each
- Sealant / butyl: Butyl tape, 3/32 in x 1 in x 45 ft, $14.99 per roll; color-matched sealant $13.99 per tube. These are different products from the 40-ft butyl tape and APS 500 sealant listed for PBR / Tuff Rib
- Underlayment: Synthetic roll, $129.50 per roll. Needed over a solid deck (on a new roof or tear-off, Florida code also requires peel-and-stick over the whole deck, self-adhered tape over every deck joint plus underlayment, or two layers); open purlin installs usually have none
Standing seam (clip or nail strip)
- Panels: Cut to length, billed per linear foot (LF)
- Trim: Ridge cap, eave drip, gable rake, Z-flashing, valley, wall flashings (see table below)
- Clips / fasteners: Clip systems: clips from $0.74 each, plus pancake screws from $0.11 each. Nail-strip systems: pancake screws only
- Closures: Snap-Z ridge closure $11.99, expanding foam $36.99 per roll
- Sealant / butyl: Butyl tape, 3/32 in x 1 in x 45 ft, $14.99 per roll; color-matched sealant $13.99 per tube
- Underlayment: Standing seam requires a high-temperature underlayment over a solid deck. Ask us which.
Worked example: 12×20 ft shed, 4/12 gable roof
26 gauge Galvalume PBR. Each slope is 6.3 ft long, so we use 7-ft panels (14 sheets, 3 ft coverage each). Trim, screws and sealant include 10% waste. Everything below is priced from the same catalog the cart uses.
| Item | Qty | Each | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| PBR panels, 26ga Galvalume: 14 sheets × 7 ft = 98 LF | 14 sheets | $30.80 | $431.20 |
| Ridge cap, 20 ft (+10% waste) | 3 pieces | $63.00 | $189.00 |
| Eave trim, 40 ft (+10% waste) | 5 pieces | $63.00 | $315.00 |
| Rake / gable trim, 25 ft (+10% waste) | 3 pieces | $63.00 | $189.00 |
| Hex screws, about 317 needed (80 per square + 1 per LF of trim, +10%; side-lap stitch screws are extra) | 2 bags of 250 | $60.00 | $120.00 |
| Foam closure strips (ridge and eave ends) | 7 packs of 4 | $10.00 | $70.00 |
| Butyl tape (closures, ridge cap and rake seals; panel side laps extra - estimate) | 3 rolls of 40 ft | $20.00 | $60.00 |
| APS 500 sealant (trim laps, trim ends and boot edges) | 2 tubes | $20.00 | $40.00 |
| Estimated total, materials only (before volume discount and delivery) | $1,414.20 | ||
Optional: 2 rolls of underlayment (253 sq ft of roof / 175 = 1.4, rounded up to 2; for a solid deck, open purlins usually have none) add $259.00. Screws shown are metal-to-wood for a wood-framed building, and side-lap stitch screws are extra. Metal framing needs metal-to-metal screws ($80.00 per bag). This is an estimate; check measurements before you order, and call us to go over your cut list.
Delivery is added at checkout for orders under $5,000 ($290, or $230 for Tuff Rib-only orders). The total above is materials only. Underlayment is fastened per the underlayment maker's instructions (commonly cap nails or cap staples). Those fasteners are not included in this example.
Match your trim
Which trim goes with which panel
Closure strips are shaped to the panel rib, and some trim (rake trim, Z-flashing, cleats and wall flashings) is sized to the rib height, so pick the row that matches your panel. Ridge caps, eave trim and valleys are bent to your roof pitch. All trim prices are per 10-ft piece. Standard trim is priced by type, gauge and finish (the "from" price is the lowest). Custom trim bent to your drawing is a flat $63.00 per 10-ft piece.

For standing seam rakes, the rake trim is held by a cleat or a Z closure depending on the panel profile. We will confirm which pieces your panel needs when you order. Corrugated and R Panel closures: call to confirm.
Installation guide
What fits what, and how to install it
The trim matches, fastener counts, minimum slopes and jobsite tips our order team works from, taken from the the panels' published installation details and Florida Product Approvals. Open a topic.
Match the trim to the panel, not the other way round. Foam closures are shaped to the panel rib, and rake trim, Z-flashing, gable cleats and wall flashings are sized to the rib height, so a 1" rib panel takes different pieces than a 1-1/2" or 1-3/4" rib panel.
Exposed-fastener panels (Tuff Rib 9-5, 5V Crimp, PBR, R Panel and corrugated) share the 12" ridge cap, eave drip, valley and endwall; the gable rake and sidewall flashing are made for each profile (Tuff Rib, PBR and 5V each have their own), and 5V uses notchable ridge, endwall and transition pieces. Standing seam takes a ridge cap, eave drip, and rake trim sized to the rib it goes over. Tell us your roof pitch when you order: ridge caps under 3:12 or over 6:12, endwalls over 5:12 and valleys over 7:12 are bent to it, and transitions need both pitches.
Trim is sold in 10-ft pieces. Stocked profiles (Tuff Rib, 5V Crimp and standing seam) run $5.84–$113.39 per 10-ft piece, priced by profile, gauge and finish; trim for PBR, R Panel and corrugated is custom bent to your drawing at one flat price, $63.00 per 10-ft piece. We confirm the pieces your panel needs when your order comes in.
Trim & flashing price listPlan on about 80 screws per roofing square (100 sq ft) of roof, plus about 1 per linear foot of trim. Hex screws come in 250-piece bags. Use 1-1/2" metal-to-wood screws over plywood or lumber, 1" self-drillers into metal purlins, and 7/8" metal-to-metal stitch (lap) screws where metal fastens to metal, such as side laps and trim.
Drive them in the flat beside the rib (1-1/2" minimum) or in the top of the rib (2" minimum), straight in, with the neoprene washer snug and never crushed. Screws pass at least 1/2" below the underside of the deck or purlin, and panels get screws on both sides of the ribs at the eave and ridge. End laps are 12" minimum with two rows of butyl tape; trim laps are 6" (eave drip 4").
Butyl tape goes under the closures: one row along the eaves, two along ridges and hips, two along valleys and one along walls. One 10.1 oz tube of APS 500 sealant lays about 30 LF of bead for trim laps, trim ends and boot edges. Edge and corner zones that need the tighter (12-inch row) pattern in the panel approval take about 140–150 screws per square.
Screw & fastener guideExposed-fastener panels need 3:12 minimum without side-lap sealant. With continuous butyl tape down every side lap plus lap screws in the ribs, Tuff Rib and 5V Crimp are rated down to 1:12 and PBR down to 1/2:12 (the Florida Building Code floor), with lap screws no more than 24" apart on Tuff Rib and 30" on PBR. Under 3:12, call us before you order. It is a detail question, not a price question.
Standing seam goes lower. Snap-lock panels (1.5" and 1.75") need 2:12, going lower only with hot-melt seam sealant per the manufacturer, and the nail-strip panels need 3:12, or as low as 1/2:12 with lap sealant. Our peel-and-stick underlayment is rated for 2:12 and steeper, so call us about underlayment for anything flatter. Snap-lock panels also need a flat, uniform 15/32" CDX plywood deck.
Exposed-fastener panels install over solid decking with approved underlayment, over 1x4 battens, or over open purlins. On a new roof or a full tear-off, Florida code (R905.1.1.1 / 1507.1.1.1) requires one of three underlayment methods: peel-and-stick over the whole deck, 3-3/4" self-adhered tape over every deck joint plus underlayment, or two layers of approved underlayment. Mechanically fastened underlayment goes down the way its maker instructs (commonly cap nails or cap staples, which are not part of a panel order). A reroof over one layer of shingles is allowed only if the panel approval says so, with new underlayment between. Our synthetic rolls are 195 sq ft gross, about 175 sq ft of roof covered per roll over a solid deck.
Underlayment guideGauge sets the span, and span decides how far apart your purlins or rafters sit: 26ga and 24ga PBR and R Panel carry further between supports than 29ga Tuff Rib, and a wood-framed building usually needs closer spacing than a steel one. Florida wind zones close it up further.
The span, fastener pattern and clip spacing for your building come from the panel's Florida Product Approval and your engineer's plan, not from a rule of thumb. Our standing seam, 5V Crimp and Tuff Rib panels have Florida Product Approval numbers, listed on our approvals page. For any other panel, call (813) 410-7427 before you buy if your permit needs approval documentation.
Standing seam clip spacing comes from the panel's approval: 16" or 12" on center on 1.75" Snap-Lock, and 18" or 8" on the 1.5" snap-lock panels, with the tighter spacing where your wind zone calls for it. Order clips for that spacing plus 10% extra, with 2 pancake screws per clip (boxes of 250). Nail-strip panels are screwed through every other slot (about every 10") or every slot (about every 5", with sealant) per the approval, which is about 1.2 or 2.4 pancake screws per LF of panel, plus 1 per LF of trim. Edge and corner zones may need the tighter clip spacing in the approval (12" on 1.75" Snap-Lock, 8" on the 1.5" snap-lock panels), which means more clips and screws.
Metal roofing gauge guideCut panels with hand shears or a nibbler. Never use a circular saw or abrasive blade: the hot sparks burn into the coating and leave rust stains, and the cut edge rusts first.
Brush metal shavings off the roof and out of the gutters the same day, because they rust and stain the finish. Carry panels on edge instead of flat so they do not kink, wear gloves, and store them dry and off the ground with one end raised so water drains. Never leave a wet bundle sitting.
Order about 10% over the measured roof area for cuts, laps and waste, and remember panels are billed in whole feet of length. Ready in 1–2 business days on cut-to-length orders, and we review your cut list with you before cutting (we call or text if anything needs confirming). Panels and trim cut to your lengths are final sale.
How to calculate what you needColors and finishes
All our colors (67 painted colors)
Colors are grouped by paint finish. The same color name can be sold in more than one group, and each swatch shows where it is available. Galvalume is not a color: it is the unpainted steel finish and costs the least. Swatches are close, not exact: check a physical sample before you order.
SMP painted (53 colors)See all 53 colorsStanding seam (1.5" Snap-Lock (16"), 1" Nail Strip, 1.5" Nail Strip and 1.5" Snap-Lock (15")) and Tuff Rib (26 and 29 gauge). R Panel, PBR, trim, ridge caps and screws are sold in the colors tagged for them below, and the 7.2 Panel colors are SMP too. Not every color is sold on every panel and gauge, so call to confirm color availability for your panel and gauge.
Kynar 500 painted (20 colors)See all 20 colorsStanding seam in 26 and 24 gauge (1.5" Snap-Lock (16"), 1" Nail Strip, 1.5" Nail Strip and 1.5" Snap-Lock (15")), Tuff Rib 26 gauge, and PBR (Kynar colors).
Aluminum .032 Kynar 500 (20 colors)See all 20 colorsStanding seam in .032 aluminum (1.5" Snap-Lock (16"), 1" Nail Strip, 1.5" Nail Strip, 1.75" Snap-Lock and 1.5" Snap-Lock (15")). Same Kynar 500 colors, plus bare mill finish.
